The drawing is in pencil on white wove paper (23 1/2 x 14 1/2 in.) and depicts Austen seated, in a three-quarter length view, facing the artist.

The illustration depicts two profiles of Black women with their backs parallel to one another, centered by an image of a flowing hourglass. The woman on the left is accessorized and in modern attire, while the woman on the right is in lace-collared clothing. Signed in pencil on the lower right by the artist, "L. Schwinger."
